More from Maui

First: we are happy to hear June & Nick, and Roger are OK in Orlando! We feel a bit guilty having fun when the storm hit them. Hope you get the power back very soon!
We leave for the Big Island of Hawaii today,  after spending a nice week here.
The previous post details our bike ride up Mt. Haleakala - which deserved its separate write-up (we admit to having caught summit fever, which can be dangerous). The only picture from that day, is the wet one of Craig on top, already posted.
Will now include a link to the Maui pictures - we are getting better, but I decided it's too complicated to rearrange the order, when I messed things up, so the pictures are only mostly chronological.
Maui pictures

Our Airbnb host has lived here for years, is an athlete, recommended routes & sights, and warned us of local drivers driving far too fast for the narrow, winding roads.
The weather has been mostly great - the saying here is the same as in New England regarding waiting an hour if you don't like what you see right now. We spent most of our time on the lusher, and wetter north-eastern side, and only rode in the high heat, on the dry side yesterday. Never had to change plans due to rain!
We rode most days, but only 30-40 miles, again over hilly terrain. Walked, and hiked a little, jumped in the ocean afterwards several times, and one of the highlights for me, was seeing the large sea turtles close up. They rope off an area where the turtles come up to rest, and to warm up, but people were allowed as close as 15' (3m). And even closer if you were in the water. There were 'only' some 10-12 turtles when we went. Our host says there can be up to 90 at a time, sometimes climbing on top of one another when the beach gets filled up!
Even on the dry side, there were pretty, small flowers (the last few pictures); we often saw chickens on the roads, both from the car, and from the bikes; mongooses ran across the road a few times (not native, and neither are the chameleons, which we never saw); early on we managed to rescue a goat, whose horns were stuck in a fence, and another time saw what we think were wild, black goats; pretty white birds hang out with the cows... can only guess why.
We never made it all the way to Hana, a popular destination. Drove part of the famous road there, and would definitely not recommend it for riding.
Our next 'home' also lists internet. We stay near Hilo until the 21st.

    1. Thank you Annemarie - nice to hear from you!
We have been very lucky weather-wise so far.
Our internet is a bit slow here, and I keep forgetting I need to leave the iPad on also when we are gone, or asleep. If not, the pictures don't get uploaded, I think..
Hope all is well with you, and HI also to Dave!
